Psalm 39:7 - What Do I Look For? (01.04.12)

I look for God to:
(1) Watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin (v1-3) / James 3:2 / Matthew 12:34
(2) Remember that life is short (v4-6)
(3) Seek forgiveness of sin and God's mercy (v7-11,13)
(4) Remember that I dwell with God as an alien (v12-13)

~ V1: James 3:2 / Matthew 12:34
- Ask God to cleanse our hearts and tame our tongue.

~ V2-3: Matthew 5:11-12
- Share the heavy burdens of your heart with God, as king David did

~ V4
- You would weep if you knew that your life was limited to 1 month, yet you laugh while you know not but it may be restricted to a day.
- Are we there yet?
- Run to God for strength to fight weariness of trials, etc and overcome them

~ V5
- I should have used more of my time, my talents, more to my master's service!
- Matthew 25:14-30 - The Parable of the Talents
- Are we becoming the men and women God wants us to be?

~ V6
- Similar to Ecclesiastes 4:8
- Luke 12:13-21 - The Parable of the Rich Fool

~ V7
- Turning point of the Psalm
- Our hope
        - Confidence that God is in control
        - Based on the promises of God's word

~ V8
- Only Jesus can save us from all our sins
- Silent submission and trust in God
- Let Him do what seems good in His sight

~ V10-12a
- Plea for mercy
- Punishment due to sin, not because of God loved David less because He had sinned
- Wealth / beauty / dearest idols
- Things desirable in this world but not for our real good

~ V12b: Leviticus 25:23; Hebrews 11:13
- Alien one who stays in a foreign county, away from his house/home, not one of the local though he lives there
- Traveller intends not to settle, only passes through a place, going homeward. Only stays in a certain place for a short time

(1) We are not strangers to God. God is our constant companion
(2) God and I are fellow aliens in this world (John 1:11)
(3) Don't be too attached to the things of this world
(4) Fellow Christians are fellow aliens
     - Don't be strangers to one another

~ V13
- God stop focusing on my sin, but keep your loving eyes on me, so that I regain my strength
