Understanding Our Faith (31.07.11)

"Saint & Sinner"

"simul iustus et peccator" by Martin Luther

Text: Romans 7:14-25; Galatians 5:16-17

Read the salutation in Romans 1:7; Ephesians 1:1-2; Philippians 1:1.

* Meaning of Saint(s) [Greek work]
- "saint" = holy, set apart, sanctified
- "saints" = used of all believers and not merely applied to persons of exceptional holiness or to those who have died and had acts of saintliness. (Phil 1:1; 4:21-22)

* Examples of Saint & Sinner
~ King David... man after God's heart... adultery, murder
~ Saint Peter... first to confess Jesus... denied Jesus 3 times
~ King Solomon... wisest man in the world... guilty of covetousness
~ Saint Paul... author of our text, John
~ ... (for you to fill in your name)
- 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come."

How then shall we live?
a) Know the meaning of SIN
+ E.g. sin: missing the mark (Romans 3:23), disobedience, rebellion, uncleanliness of mind and thoughts, intentional and unintentional acts of commission and omission.
+ The root and the fruits
- The root is turning away from God
- The fruits will be our sinful natures / actions.
b) Confess our sins - 1 John 1:6; 2:2; James 5:16
+ 4 Benefits
1. The freedom of confession!
2. The joy of forgiveness!
3. The fruits of repentance!
4. The restoration of relationship!
c) Fix your eyes on Jesus - Hebrew 12:2
       - Examples
      * the way He accepts people - "friend of sinners"
      * the way He touches people - healing them, setting them free
      * the way He speaks and lived the truth of God
      * the way He evangelises, share the gospel
      * the way He loves - a sin free life
d) Live as saints, not sinner - Read 1John 3:4-10; 1 John 3:2-3; 1 John 3:8; Psalm 34:15; Psalm 17:8.

Conclusion: Today' s greatest need - victory over sin and the flesh
